CURRICULUM

The new CAPS curriculum has been implemented in Grades R to 7.  The new curriculum comes with a new set of expectations and requirements to pass at the end of the year.

 

Please note that the Language of Instruction at Mountain Road Primary is ENGLISH (Home Language).  The first additional language is AFRIKAANS.  Afrikaans is taught and assessed from Grade 1.  All learners, regardless of their first language, need to meet the pass requirements expected for English and Afrikaans.

 

FOUNDATION PHASE: CAPS

 

The subjects taught are:

  • Home Language (English)
  • First Additional Language (Afrikaans)
  • Mathematics
  • Life Skills - Beginning Knowledge, Creative Art, Physical Education and Personal & Social Well-being

All subjects listed above are assessed.

PASS REQUIREMENTS: (Foundation Phase)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  • Afrikaans is not assessed in Grade R.

It is of utmost importance that parents assist their children and ensure that they are well prepared for their assessments.  Assessments are clearly indicated on the weekly homework chart.  Please also attend the termly parent teacher meetings to discuss your child's progress.

 

INTERMEDIATE PHASE GRADE 4 to 6: CAPS

 

The 6 subjects taught are: (hours allocated per week)

  • Home Language (English) - 6 hours
  • First Additional Language (Afrikaans) - 5 hours
  • Mathematics - 6 hours
  • Science and Technology -  3.5 hours
  • Social Sciences (History & Geography) - 3 hours
  • Life Skills (Art, Phys. Ed, Personal and Social well-being) - 4 hours

All subjects listed above are assessed.

 

CODES AND PERCENTAGES: The same as Foundation Phase codes above.

 

PROMOTION REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERMEDIATE PHASE: The following codes must be met in all areas

 

  • Home Language (English) - Code 4 (50%)
  • First Additional Language (Afrikaans) - Code 3 (40%)
  • Mathematics - Code 3 (40%)
  • Any other two remaining subjects - Code 3 (40%)


ASSESSMENTS: CASS: Continuous Assessment

 

Each subject has it's expected assessment criteria and tasks that must be completed by the child.  These tasks take place at various times within the school term and parents should thus take careful note of the Assessment Plans sent home by the educators.  Examples of such tasks - oral presentations, projects, research, tests, reading,case studies, investigations, translations, etc.

 

CASS makes up 75% of the final mark.

 

Exams will be written twice within the year.  The FINAL exams will cover all work taught throughout the year.

 

EXAMS make up 25% of the final mark

 

SENIOR PHASE:  GRADE 7 CAPS

 

The 9 subjects taught are:

  • English Home Language
  • Afrikaans First Additional Language
  • Mathematics
  • Natural Science
  • Social Sciences (History & Geography)
  • Life Orientation
  • Creative Arts
  • Economic and Management Sciences
  • Technology

All subjects above are assessed formally.

 

PROMOTION REQUIREMENTS FOR SENIOR PHASE:
